Google
(www.google.com)
- META Tag Support. Google supports the Robot META
tag and uses your title while indexing your web site. It
does not appear that Google makes use of the Keywords or
Description META tag at this time.
- Spidering. Will spider or follow all links it finds
on your web site and index them into their database.
- Link Popularity. If lots of web sites link to your
site, then your site will be ranked higher in the search
rankings.
- Submission Time. Getting listed in Google can either
be very quick (under 2 weeks) or very long (several months)
depending on their crawl schedule and how many other web
sites are in queue to be indexed before yours.
Yahoo
(www.yahoo.com)
- Listings. Since Yahoo! does not use robots, everything
indexed into Yahoo! is done by people. The best chance on
getting your site listed is to describe your web site as
accurate as possible. The final decision rests up to the
editor who reviews your web site so your content must impress
them to be worthy of adding you to their database. Google
now provides primary search listings for Yahoo and Yahoo's
actual directory displays after Google's results are listed.
- Paid Submissions. Yahoo offers an express submission
service which will get you a guaranteed response.
- Submission Time. Estimated 4-8 weeks.
Dmoz/Open
Directory Project/ODP (www.dmoz.com)
- Listings. Since ODP is powered completely
on editors who are experts in their categories, everything
indexed into ODP is done by people. No META tags, ALT image
tags, HTML comments or image maps will help boost your ranking
here. The final decision rests up to the editor who reviews
your web site.
- Submission Time. Estimated 4-8 weeks.
LookSmart
(www.looksmart.com)
- Listings. Looksmart does not use robots so everything
indexed into Looksmart is done by people. Inktomi now provides
secondary listings for Looksmart when no results are returned
by Looksmart's primary index.
- Submission Time. Estimated 1-8 weeks.
AllTheWeb
(www.alltheweb.com)
- Powered By. AllTheWeb has been powered by Fast
Search since its inception in 1999. Earlier this year AllTheWeb
was acquired by Overture.
- Popularity Technology. AllTheWeb offers full Boolean
searching, no stop words, and other advanced features like
the indexing of a full web page, PDF files, Microsoft Word
files, and text within Flash files. Its database is also
frequently refreshed.
- Getting Listed. The only current way to get listed
with AlltheWeb is through Lycos paid inclusion and several
inclusion packages like Lycos InSite Select or Lycos
InSite Pro. You can also submit your web site for
free but there are no guarantees that your web site will
be listed in AllTheWeb's database.
- Submission Time. Estimated 48 to 72 hours.
Altavista
(www.altavista.com)
- META Tags. Altavista supports various META tags,
with focus on the keywords and description META tags.
- Spidering. Will spider or follow all links it finds
on your web site and index them into their database.
- Spam. Altavista will not tolerate web sites that
try to "spam" their index with the same page over
and over (ie: too many doorway pages will get you blacklisted).
Additionally, repeating words often in your META tags may
get your site demoted or removed from Altavista's index.
- Link Popularity. If lots of web sites link to your
site, then your site will be ranked higher in the search
rankings.
- Submission Time. Estimated 2-5 days.
Lycos
(www.lycos.com)
- Spidering. Will spider or follow all links it finds
on your web site and index them into their database.
- Spam. Lycos will not index web sites that try to
"Spam" or abuse META tags into their database.
- Link Popularity. If lots of web sites link to your
site, then your site will be ranked higher in the search
rankings.
- Submission Time. Estimated 3 weeks.
AOL
(www.aolsearch.com)
- America Online's Netfind. Very important resource
to ensure that AOL users can find your site. AOL Netfind
is a co-branded search engine powered by the Open Directory
Project and now by Google.
Webcrawler
(www.webcrawler.com)
- META Tags. Webcrawler makes use of
META Tags, particularly the Description META Tag and the
Title of your web page.
- Spidering. Will spider or follow all links it finds
on your web site and index them into their database.
- Spam. Abusing META Tags or spoofing their search
robot may get your web site lower rankings or even blacklisted.
Limit repeating keywords in your META tags.
- Submission Time. Estimated 2-3 weeks.
Askjeeves
(www.ask.com)
- Listings. Human editors compile a
large knowledge base of questions and answers from web sites
which they find on the Internet. These editors have a strict
guideline to adhere to when selecting which sites to add
to their knowledge base.
- Link Popularity. If lots of web sites link to your
site, then your site will be ranked higher in the search
rankings.
- Getting Listed. Must get a human editor to review
your site for inclusion.
- Submission Time. Estimated 6-8 weeks.
Teoma
(www.teoma.com)
- Listings. Sites are sorted in order
of perceived relevance.
- Getting Listed. The only current way to get listed
with Teoma is through IneedHits.com paid inclusion program.
Teoma does not have a submit url location, but instead maintains
a pay per page inclusion program in coordination with Ask
Jeeves, Teoma's parent company.
- Submission Time. Estimated 7 days.
MSN
Search (search.msn.com)
- Listings. MSN Search provides a blend
of human-powered directory information and crawler coverage.
- Getting Listed. You need to be listed with search
providers LookSmart and Inktomi.
