A
Acronym
A series of letter used to represent a word.
ActiveX
An application technology developed by Microsoft that allows multiple applications to share information.  An ActiveX control can improve functionality with web site counters, calculators, and animation.
Animated images
Pictures that show movement on Web pages.  Animated images consist of GIF images that have been layered on top of one another to create the impression of movement.  Heavily used in banner advertising.
Applet
A program or utility that is executed from within another application and cannot be executed from the operating system alone.
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)
A technology that uses fiber-optic wires to transmit images, sound, and data at speed comparable to television.
Attachments
Files that are attached to and sent with e-mail messages.
Autoresponder
A program that automatically registers an e-mail address and message content and sends the same message to each responder.  Commonly used in subscribing and unsubscribing to news lists and the distribution of electronic catalogs.

B
Basefont
A body text size against which other font sizes are gauged.
Bit
A unit of information that is either a 1 or 0 (on or off).
Block quote
An indented section of text, used to offset a particular element of a Web page.
Bookmark
A browser feature that stores the URL for a Web document in a folder that is accessed through a menu.
Boolean operators
Selected words used to limit search results including "and, or, and not, and near".
Browser
A program that translates HTML code for Web documents into graphics, text, or multimedia.  Some browsers are not able to view graphics.
Byte
A unit of information consisting of 8 bits, which is the equivalent of a single character.

C
Cell
Areas at the intersection of a row and a column in a table.
Cell padding
The amount of space in the area between the edges of a cell's data and the cell's border, similar to margin areas within typed pages.
Cell spacing
The area between adjacent cells in a table.
Checkbox items
Form elements that are used so viewers can easily select or deselect items on a form.  Checkbox items display as a box next to a checkbox label.

Dedicated line
A telephone line that is reserved exclusively for one use such as Fax, Modem, or Telephone.
Dial-up account
An account from a service provider that accesses the Internet through phone lines.  The modem attached to your computer dials a host computer to connect to the Internet.
Document viewer
A program that displays publications, such as books and magazines, without having the software/application with which they were created installed on your desktop.
Domain
Network computers and devices that are grouped and administered as a single unit, sharing rules and procedures.
Domain name
A name that identifies an IP Address, as in "eLinkProductions.com".  Domain names are used in URLs to locate specific Web pages.

E
E-mail
Electronic messages that are transmitted between computers over communication networks.

Extension
Tags that are part of an existing group of officially accepted tags.   There are Microsoft extensions as well as Netscape extensions, in which case, some tags work in one browser, but not the other.

F
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
A file that contains basic answers to questions that many visitors to a Web site may have.  It is usually presented in a question and answer format.
File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
A method that enables computers to transfer files between one another over the Internet.
Fixed font
Fonts in which the widths of all letters are the same.
Followed link
A link that has been accessed.
Font
The typeface of text, such as Times Roman or Helvetica.
Font attributes
The font, style, type size, and color of text.
Form
An interactive element of a Web page that can be used to exchange information.  Visitors to a Web site can enter information into a form and then send it to different sources, through e-mail or directly into a database. 
Frame
A Web page feature that divides the information appearing on the screen so you can simultaneously view different pages from one location.  Many of the older (still widely used) browsers are not able to view Web pages that are created using frames.  
Freeware
Programs that are freely distributed in which the author(s), require no registration fees.
FTP client
A program used to access and transfer files to and from FTP sites.

Gateway
A combination of hardware and software that links two different types of computer networks.
GIF
Graphics Interchange Format:  A file format originally developed to transfer graphics over the Internet.  See Animated Images.  Animated GIF's are popular banner ad graphics.
Graphical interface
A computer display format that enables users to launch programs, select commands, and view file lists by pointing to and selecting icons on the screen.
Graphic Link
A graphical page element that links one Web document to another.

Heading
A specially formatted title or topic line of text used to separate and organize information in a document.
Heading cells
Cells within a table that specify format data to represent titles or topic names for rows and columns.  Usually, heading cell data is offset by appearing as bold text.
Home page
A Web site's introductory document/page.  Click Here to go to eLink's Home Page.
Horizontal rule line
A line used to divide areas of a document.
Host Name
The first name in an URL after the protocol, which denotes the computer's domain.
HTML
See Hypertext Markup Language
Hyperlink
A textural or graphical page element that links one Web document/page to another.  Also known as "link".
Hypertext
Text, images, and sounds that can be linked together to allow the browsing of related topics in a non-structured way.
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)
A computer language used to write documents for the World Wide Web.   (Everything you see in the site that you looking at now was written in HTML.)

I
Image maps
Graphic elements with mouse-sensitive hyperlinked areas.  Often you will see images maps used as main menus on Web sites enabling viewers to jump to different areas within the same page, other pages of the site, or even different Web sites.
Index
A list of categories an subcategorizes, arranged from general to more specific at each level in a site.
Indirect Internet connection
A computer that is not directly connected to the Internet, but is one client among many other clients connect to a server.  Their server, in turn, is connect to the Internet.  Many businesses run there computers systems in this manner.
Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN)
A communications protocol for sending data, voice, video over digital telephone lines.
Internet
A global network of networks allowing the public exchange of information and commerce.
Internet Service Provider (ISP)
A company that provides access to the Internet.
IP address
A four-part, numeric identifier for computers and devices on a TCP-/IP network.  Each of the four parts are numbers from 0 to 255, separated by a period.

Java
An object-oriented programming language developed by Sun Microsystems used to create multimedia applications for the Internet.
JPEG
Joint Photographic Experts Group, which is the name of the standards organization that developed the image format.

K
Keyword
A word or phrase used in database searches to find specific information.   Keywords are used in search engines by Internet surfers who want to locate specific information.
Kilobits per second
Data transfer speed on a network or modem.  One Kbps is equal to 1024 bits per second.
Kilobyte
Equal to 1024 bytes.  Abbreviated as KB.

LAN
See Local Area Network
Link
A textural or graphical page element consisting of an anchor and a target.  Links are used to "jump" within a single document or from one document to another on the Internet.  Also called a hyperlink.
Local Area Network (LAN)
A network community used to link computers that are close together, usually an office, sometimes a group of buildings belonging to the same company.

Majordomo
A public mailing list program.
Markup Language
A document layout and hypermedia-specification language.
Megabyte
One million bytes.  (MB)
Motherboard
The main circuit board in a computer.
Multimedia

Network
Two or more computers linked together, either locally by wire or in widely dispersed areas by telephone lines or radio waves, in order to share data.
Newsgroup
An online discussion group in which participants can exchange ideas and opinion by posting messages to a public area.
No frames option
An option that eLink uses in your frame documents that offers users an alternative to viewing your site with frames.  Many browsers that Internet users have do not allow them to view the content of a Web site that is using frames.

Ordered List
A collection of items in HTML documents that must be displayed in a specific pattern, such as instructions or table of contents.

Plug-in
An application that extends the capabilities of a browser.   "Flash" is a plug-in.
Posting
Newsgroup messages that are transmitted automatically to news servers in a news network.
Post Office Protocol
A communications protocol used by mail servers to exchange e-mail.
Preferences
Options you use to customize browsers, such as changing the colors and fonts of the display screen, adjusting whether you see images or not, and security options.
Profile
Information necessary to locate and log on to an FTP site, such as site name, URL, user identification, and password.
Protocol
The format that two computers use for transmitting data between them.
Public domain
Items, such as files, you can use without infringing on a copyright.

Q
Query
A question or series of questions submitted to search engines to find keywords or phrases.

RealAudio
A audio format for files that enables you to hear sounds as files load.
Reset Button
An HTML action button that clears and resets the default values in a form.
RGB
Red, green, blue-  These three colors of light can be mixed to produce any other color.
Router
An intermediary device on a communications network that receives transmitted messages and forwards them to their correct destinations.

Scrollable frame
A frame that contains a scroll bar you can use to view information that is not fully visible in the frame.
Search engine
Also known as a search utility, search engines are remote programs used to perform keyword searches for information on the Internet.
Server
A computer that stores information and processes requests from client computers.
Server name
Specifies the server on which Web pages reside.  The server name is also commonly known as the domain name.
Shareware
Programs that are freely distributed in which the author, or authors, request users to register the program for a small fee.
ShockWave
A set of programs developed by Macromedia, Inc. that allows the combination of sound, text, animation, and video into an interactive file or files to be accessed over the Internet. 
Side headings
Headings that display beside a table row.
Streaming
The ability to hear sound files as they load.
Submit button
An HTML action button that activates a form-processing sequence when clicked by the user.
"Send" button

Table
A collection of numbers, words, or graphics arranged in related rows and columns.  Each row and column consists of a series of intersecting cells.
Text Link
A link that consists of text, which is usually underlined and a different color than the rest of the text in this page.  Example is the "BACK TO TOP" link.  When clicked on with the mouse, the text link takes you back to the top of the page.
Transparent Image
Images that have been specially formatted to allow the page background to show through the image background, giving the remainder of the image the appearance of floating on the page.

U
Uniform Resource Locator (URL)
A Web address used to display a specific Web page.
User name
A unique name or number that an ISP or online service uses to identify a user.

Virus
A piece of computer code or program that is designed by a person, or group of people, to cause harm to computers. 
Visited link
A link that has been accessed.

W
Wide Area Network (WAN)
A group of computers linked together via telephone lines or radio waves.   WANs can also be a system of LANs connected together.
World Wide Web (WWW)
The area of the Internet in which you can view documents that contain text combined with a variety of other media, including graphics, sounds, and animation.

Zip file
One or more files that are compressed to reduce file size.
